IAB Report - India-friendly 5-door MINI revealed
BMW has revealed the 5-door variant of the 2014 Mini. This is the first time the Mini gets a 5-door bodystyle (save for the Countryman variant).
Compared to the 3-door model, the wheelbase of the 5-door variant sees an extension of 72 mm (to 2,567 mm). The added wheelbase improves the rear seat legroom by 72 mm, headroom by 15 mm and shoulder room by 61 mm. The boot space too has increased by 67 liters to 278 liters. Additionally, the rear seat back can be folded in a 60:40 configuration for more luggage space.
The 5-door is longer than the 3-door by 161 mm and taller by 11 mm. Interestingly, the 5-door Mini measures 3,982 mm in length (the Cooper S 5-door and Cooper SD 5-door measure 4,005 mm in length), and comes powered by 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The diesel 5-door Mini would be eligible for small car excise duty benefits in India if it were to launch here.
The Cooper S and Cooper SD variants are powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-liter petrol and diesel engine respectively. More details about the engine specification are available in the press release below.
European sales of the 5-door Mini commence in October this year. If BMW were to launch the 5-door Mini in India, it would compete with premium hatchbacks such as the Mercedes A Class and BMW 1 Series.
