A Turbo RS variant of the new Alto is also planned for the Japanese market.

A Motor Vikatan reader snapped the 2015 Suzuki Alto (Japanese spec) on the streets of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, recently. Launched in Japan in December 2014, a few units of the new Alto have been imported into the country for R&D tests, according to import-export website, Zauba.com. However, Maruti is unlikely to launch the JDM Alto in India as it already has the Alto 800 and K10 in the entry-level segment.

Thanks to an all-new platform, the new Alto is lighter by 60 kg compared to its predecessor.

The JDM Alto, now in its eighth generation, is based on an all-new lightweight platform and is a considerable 60 kg lighter than its predecessor. The small car is efficiently packaged at 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, and 1,475-1,500 mm in height (depending on the variant).

Power for the Alto comes from a three-cylinder 0.66-liter petrol engine which puts out 48 hp, or a higher 51 hp with a VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system. The engine of the Alto adheres to Japanese "kei" car regulations, and is paired to 5-speed AMT, CVT or 5-speed manual transmissions.

The Alto is available with three gearbox options in Japan.
