European production reported to start in August.

BMW is in the final stage of testing the 2016 3 Series (facelift), or the 3 Series LCI (life cycle impulse) as it calls it. Production of the facelifted 3 Series is expected to start in August, and a debut will take place in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, according to reports.

The F30 LCI will be the first 3 Series to come with LED headlights.

The front fascia of the 2016 3 Series will see modest changes, but a major technological leap: The facelifted F30 3 Series will be the first 3 Series to be equipped with LED headlights. Other changes (which are not present on this rendering) will include a tweaked kidney grille and redesigned front and rear bumpers.

Speaking of the rear, the 2016 3 Series will be given revised taillight clusters with LED strips for a more upmarket look. Changes to the sheet metal are not expected though. BMW is reported to have upgraded the iDrive connectivity system, and extended the range of trim options for the cabin. Again, extensive changes will not be seen.

For the European market, the base variant of the 3 Series would get the 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine.

The base variant of the 2016 3 Series is expected to be powered by the 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, though we suspect the Indian model will continue with 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Offered in 320d and 328i variants, the 3 Series is assembled at the Chennai plant of the German luxury car maker via CKD kits.

Rivals: Audi A4, Mercedes C Class, Jaguar XE
