2016 Toyota Hilux (next gen Fortuner-based pickup) engine details leaked - Report
New diesel engines replace the existing 2.5- and 3.0-liter units.
The next generation 2016 Toyota Hilux is expected to be revealed in Asia shortly before June, according to sources. The 2016 Fortuner which will be based on the new ladder-frame architecture of the new Hilux will be unveiled a month later, a person in the know told Indian Autos Blog.
Prior to the unveil, it appears that the engine details of the new Hilux have leaked during an internal meeting in Thailand, one of the largest markets for the new generation utility vehicles.
Indian Autos Blog has reported in the past that the new generation IMVs (Innovative International Multipurpose Vehicle), such as the new Innova, Fortuner and Hilux, would feature new diesel engines. This product sheet further bolsters the report as it indicates Toyota will replace the 2.5- and 3.0-liter diesel engines with 2.4- and 2.8-liter downsized units, which sources tell us, will offer similar if not enhanced driving comfort with a noticeable increase in fuel economy.

2016 Toyota Hilux 2.4 MT: 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with Toyota's VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbo) technology; 164.9 hp at 3,600 rpm and 343 Nm of torque between 1,400-3,400 rpm, 5MT gearbox.
2016 Toyota Hilux 2.4 AT: 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with Toyota's VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbo) technology; 160 hp and 400 Nm of torque between 1,600-2,000 rpm, 6AT gearbox.
2016 Toyota Hilux 2.8 MT: 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with Toyota's VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbo) technology; 174.3 hp at 3,400 rpm and 420 Nm of torque between 1,400-2,600 rpm, 6MT gearbox.
2016 Toyota Hilux 2.8 AT: 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with Toyota's VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbo) technology; 174.3 hp and 450 Nm of torque between 1,600-2,400 rpm, 6AT gearbox.
The new Fortuner and Hilux are also expected to be given two driving modes - Power mode and Eco mode, wherein the throttle maps could be altered to deliver increased performance or fuel economy.
To recap, the new Fortuner as well as the new Innova are expected to launch in India next year. More details are expected in the coming days.
