Toyota has launched successors to two of its IMV (Innovative International Multipurpose Vehicle) products, with the third also due for a launch in Thailand this year. The third vehicle in question is the 2016 Toyota Innova, which is extremely important for the Indian market as the Innova is the best-selling product for TKM (Toyota Kirloskar Motor).

Here are 5 things we know about the 2016 Innova:

1. Follows an all new design

Leaked images of the new Innova have already shown the MPV to get a completely new styling for its headlights, grille, bumpers and taillights, though the overall shape of the vehicle remains similar to the current generation model. Spyshots have also shown the 2016 Innova to be slightly longer than the current model, indicating that cabin space could be improved.

2. New 'GD' diesel engine

The new GD diesel engine is claimed to be 10 percent more fuel efficient on the 2016 Hilux Revo. A similar improvement is expected on the Innova as well. Image - HiluxRevoThailand.com

The Innova diesel is likely to trade its 2.5-liter diesel engine for the all-new 2.4-liter 'GD' diesel engine, which produces 150 PS and 400 Nm of torque on the 2016 Fortuner. However, Toyota is unlikely to offer the more powerful 2.8-liter diesel on the Innova, though a petrol variant will continue for select markets. The petrol Innova will continue to be powered by the 2.7-liter VVT-i engine.

3. Diesel AT to be offered

The current Innova gets an automatic transmission for the petrol variant in select markets.

Keeping in mind the growing demand for an automatic transmission, the new Innova will pack a 6-speed torque converter for the diesel variant, though the standard gearbox would be a 6-speed manual unit. Sources tell Indian Autos Blog that the Innova diesel AT will be introduced for the Indian market as well.

4. Increased emphasis on safety

TKM (Toyota Kirloskar Motor) made dual front airbags standard on all variants of the Innova (on all other models as well) earlier this year, though the new 2016 Innova will get advanced safety features. These are expected to include side and curtain airbags, VSM (Vehicle Stability Management) and a re-developed ladder-frame construction for improved frontal crash protection.

5. Indian launch next year

The current Innova will continue in the market till next year at least.

The new Innova will go on sale in Thailand this year, but it will be introduced in the Indian market only in the next financial year. A premiere at the Auto Expo 2016 could be on the agenda though. According to reports, the new Innova is expected to cost INR 1.5 lakhs more than the current model.
