IAB reader spots the 2017 BMW 5 Series in Germany - Spied

World debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.

The next generation BMW 5 Series was spotted testing, featuring a camouflaged production-spec body and temporary headlamps, by IAB reader David in Germany. Although nothing much can be said about the design currently, the new 5 Series will draw inspiration from the new BMW 7 Series.

The new BMW 5 Series is likely to draw design inspiration from the new BMW 7 Series.

The front-end will feature sleek LED headlamps (optional laser lighting), large BMW kidney grille with active ducts, and simple bumper design, while the rear gets OLED taillamps and cutouts for chrome finished taillpipes.

The new 5 Series will ride on BMW’s CLAR RWD platform sourced from the 7 Series, which integrates materials such as carbonfibre, aluminium, magnesium and high-strength steel. Reports suggest that the next BMW 5 Series will be 100 kg lighter than the current model.

The engine lineup will feature the latest B47 diesel and B48 petrol 2.0-litre four-cylinder units. The more powerful and luxurious models will be offered with the B57 diesel and B58 petrol 3.0-litre six-cylinder units. The B57 unit is said to be a new quad-turbo V6 diesel. There will also be a 444 bhp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine.

Inside, the 2017 5 Series will be as advanced as the new 7 Series (pictured) reportedly, with the centerpiece as the fifth-generation iDrive system.
