Seen below is a pictorial comparison of the 2017 BMW 5 Series and its predecessor, which was introduced in an updated avatar as the 2014 BMW 5 Series.

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is up to 100 kg lighter than its predecessor.

On the outside, the redesign has made the 2017 BMW 5 Series the most aerodynamic car in its segment with a drag coefficient of only 0.22. As standard, all variants of the 2017 BMW 5 Series get LED headlights and optionally, the sedan will be available with BMW's adaptive LED Headlights with variable light distribution including adaptive roundabout lights and BMW Selective Beam anti-dazzle high beam with a range of up to 500 metres.

Coming to the platform itself, the 2017 BMW 5 Series is based on a newly designed chassis with a lower centre of gravity, and is lighter by up to 100 kg over the outgoing model. All the engines in the 2017 BMW 5 Series line-up belong to the newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units, with four engine options initially announced.

The new 5 Series gets the iDrive touch control with gesture control.

On the inside, the BMW Head-Up Display now has a projection surface that is 70 percent larger than before, and rear-seat passengers get comfort seats with massage function and innovative seat operation using touch sensors and not to forget the new 5 Series gets four-zone climate control with ionisation and "discreet" air fragrancing as well.

The 2017 BMW 5 Series also adopts a new high-resolution 10.25-inch iDrive screen which can be operated using the iDrive Controller, voice commands, gestures, or by touch. Other features on the 2017 BMW 5 Series include a stereo camera with optional radar and ultrasound sensors, a remote parking system (allows the 2017 BMW 5 Series to be manoeuvred into tight parking spaces remotely using the car key), inductive phone charging and WiFi hotspot for up to ten devices.
