2018 BMW 3 Series to shed 80 kg, sit on the CLAR platform - Report
Could be up to 80 kg lighter.
Auto Bild, in its recent report, has revealed some details of the next generation BMW 3 Series (codename: G20), along with a rendering of the same. The vehicle, drawing inspiration from the upcoming 7 Series, will be based on the CLAR platform or cluster architecture (earlier known as 35up), and will be lighter by up to 80 kilos.
The sleeker looking design, both at front and rear, suggests shorter overhangs and a longer wheelbase. Use of lightweight materials like carbon fibre, high strength steel, and aluminium will enable the above mentioned weight reduction, while safety and driving assistance systems are to be shared with the flagship 7 Series. These will include autonomous parking, lane assist, semi-autonomous driving is stop-go traffic, etc.
According to the report, engine range could include 3-cylinder petrol and diesel engines (perhaps the same 1.5L unit from the Mini) at the bottom of the range, 4-cylinder engines in the middle, and straight six units for the top spec models. The M3 and M4 duo could see the power figure rise to 500 hp, while new hybrid versions will also be available - with up to a 160 km range.
