2018 Yamaha YZF-R1 launched in India at INR 20.7 lakhs

India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd. (IYM) today launched the new 2018 Yamaha YZF-R1 in a bid to strengthen its presence in the superbike segment in India. The bike costs INR 20,73,074 (ex-showroom, Delhi) and comes to the country via the CBU route.

The 2018 Yamaha YZF-R1 is available in two colours: Yamaha Blue and Tech Black. The motorcycle gets updated features, like a new Quick Shift System (Up and Down), and a new Lift Control System (LIF) with more progressive mapping. Commenting on the launch of the new YZF-R1, Mr. Roy Kurian, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd. said:

The new YZF-R1 model will strengthen Yamaha in its superbike segment in Indian market. It inherits its technology from Yamaha’s racing machine YZR-M1. This model also highlights Yamaha’s improved aerodynamics which posts it closer to the MotoGP attributes, and which is a rare potential available in today’s market. Yamaha plans to increase its market share in supersports segment as the new YZF-R1 is expected to attract the younger racing enthusiasts.

The YZF-R1 is powered by a 998 cc, cross plane, 4-cylinder, 4-valve engine that develops 200 PS - without ram air pressurization. The power comes in at 13,500 rpm, and a peak torque of 112.4 Nm arrives at 11,500 rpm. Derived from YZR-M1 cross plane technology, its cross plane crankshaft gives an uneven 270° - 180° - 90° - 180° firing sequence for high levels of linear torque with outstanding traction.

The exhaust system is a 4-2-1 Titanium unit with mid ship muffler for better mass centralization.

The bike features a 6-axis IMU as well. The IMU communicates with the ECU, which activates the technologies in Yamaha Ride Control (YRC): Power Mode, Traction Control System, Slide Control System, Launch Control System and an updated Lift Control System and new Quick Shift System with rev-matching. All these systems are adjustable and can be saved within four presets in the YRC system.

The engine sits inside a Delta-box frame, which holds the 43 mm upside down front fork, and the rear link-type monoshock. Brakes include dual 320 mm front discs with radial callipers, and a single 220 mm rear disc. The brakes feature lean angle-sensitive ABS and Unified Braking System for optimum handling. Despite sporting a 17-litre fuel tank, the motorcycle weighs only 200 kg (wet). Rivals of the motorcycle include the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, Suzuki GSX-R1000, and the BMW S 1000 RR.
