Lighter & advanced next-gen 2019 Honda CBR600RR under development

Honda is reportedly developing a new generation 2019 Honda CBR600RR, according to emission documents filed by the company with the California Air Resources Bureau (CARB).

The new Honda CBR600RR will likely be around 10 kg lighter as compared to the current generation model. The motorcycle will likely feature a radical design, an extensive suite of electronic rider aids, and an updated chassis.

The Supersport (600 cc) segment has seen a rapid downfall in sales in the recent years. Most of the marquee bikemakers haven’t updated their 600 cc motorcycles, with the only exceptions being the Yamaha R6 and the MV Agusta 675 that are homologated for the target audience. That said, Kawasaki is reportedly working on the next-generation Kawasaki ZX-6R, while Triumph has unveiled its Moto2 class 675 cc, triple-cylinder engine, which is likely to make way into the next generation Triumph Daytona 765.

All the motorcycles mentioned could be launched globally in 2019 and resurrect the Supersport segment. The Honda CBR600RR wouldn’t be of much interest in the Indian context as the company doesn’t have any plans to launch the bike locally. Honda has never introduced the CBR600RR officially in the domestic market. Moreover, the only other Supersport in India, the Triumph Daytona 675 was discontinued due to lack of sales.

The current generation 2016 Honda CBR600RR sources power from a 599 cc, inline-4, liquid-cooled, 16-valve, DOHC engine that produces a maximum power of 113 bhp at 13,500 rpm while developing a peak torque of 66 Nm at 11,250 rpm. The engine transmits power to the wheel via a 6-speed gearbox.

The 2019 Honda CBR600RR will reportedly be around 10 kg lighter as compared to the 2016 CBR600RR (pictured).

The Honda CBR600RR features 41 mm Big Piston front forks with preload, rebound, and compression damping adjustability, while the rear gets a mono-shock with adjustable preload, rebound, and compression. The motorcycle features dual 310 mm discs at the front with radial-mounted four-piston callipers and a 220mm disc. The bike rides on 17-inch alloy wheels that wrap on 120/70ZR-17 180/55ZR-17 tubeless tires at the front and back, respectively.
