5 things we know about the 2017 BMW 5 Series - IAB Picks
Will feature the 'Carbon Core' lightweight body structure.
The sixth generation BMW 5 Series (F10/F11) has neared the end of its lifecycle and will enter its seventh generation next year. Here are 5 things we know about the 2017 BMW 5 Series.
Design and Style
The 2017 BMW 5 Series will be largely inspired by the sixth-generation 2016 BMW 7 Series. An M Sport package will be available for a sportier styling. A speculative rendering (above) from RM. Design previews the all-new model in near-production guise.
Platform
The 2017 BMW 5 Series will be based on the CLAR (cluster architecture) rear-wheel drive platform as the 2016 BMW 7 Series. The all-new model's body structure will see significant usage of CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic), steel and aluminum. This special body structure, which BMW calls 'Carbon Core' in the 7 Series, will make the next-gen 5 Series lighter by around 100 kg. The entry-level model will be rear-wheel drive, but models with xDrive all-wheel drive system will be available moving atop the range.
Engine and Transmission
Starting from the entry-level model, the less powerful models will feature the latest B47 diesel and B48 petrol 2.0-litre four-cylinder units. The more powerful and luxurious models will be offered with the B57 diesel and B58 petrol 3.0-litre six-cylinder units. The B57 unit is said to be a new quad-turbo V6 diesel. There will also be a 444 bhp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine.
A plug-in hybrid powertrain will also be offered, packing a 2.0-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and an electric motor. The electric motor will offer a zero-emissions driving range of more than 20 miles (32 km). Transmission choices are said to include 6-speed manual and 9-speed automatic.
Features
Noteworthy features of the 2017 BMW 5 Series should include BMW Laserlight, adjustable grille bars in the BMW kidney (upper) grille, BMW Display Key, Remote Control Parking, iDrive infotainment system with touch display and BMW gesture control, and Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system.
