Could set the performance benchmark for a diesel-powered SUV.

Ahead of its global launch anticipated to take place later this year or early next year, a prototype of the Audi SQ7 was snapped testing in Mumbai, India, where Audi's models routinely undergo global testing. The sole giveaway in identifying this prototype as the SQ7 is the quad-exhaust system, whereas the regular TDI and TFSI variants of the SUV get a dual-exhaust system.

A 4.2L V8 TDI engine could deliver as much as 400 bhp.

Reports state that the SQ7 will be powered by a 4.2-liter V8 TDI engine with as much as 400 bhp on tap. This, according to the reports, should suffice for a 0-100 km/h time in less than 5.5 seconds and a top-speed in the region of 300 km/h, putting the SQ7 in close comparison to sister brand Bentley's Bentayga.

The Bentayga, which had its premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week claims bragging rights of the world's fastest SUV with a top-speed of 301 km/h from its newly-developed 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine.

Prior to the SQ7, Audi India will first introduce the regular TDI variant of the Q7 this November.

The SQ7 is also expected with performance dampers, a lower ride height, enhanced bumpers to aid in aerodynamics, and a revised differential for better distribution of power. Inside, the performance SUV would get Audi's Sport package which usually includes a flat-bottomed steering wheel, sports seats, contrast stitching and sporty-aluminium inserts in the dashboard and center console.
