Bajaj appoints new distributor in Mexico; starts constructing a CKD facility - Report

As part of its strategy to expand its export business aggressively, Bajaj Auto this year had shared its plan to have sales, design and R&D personnel in Thailand. An assembly plant in Thailand would help save cost on taxes and would allow the brand to sell its products at competitive prices.

Bajaj Auto will introduce the Dominar 400, Avenger range and Platina in the Mexican market. Motodrive, a part of Surman Group, has been appointed as the distributor of Bajaj motorcycles and spare parts in Mexico.

In an update this month, the company has signed Motodrive, a part of Surman Group, as the distributor of its motorcycles and spare parts in Mexico. Motodrive will offer pre-purchase, purchase and post-sale services to customers. Bajaj Auto will launch the Dominar 400, Avenger range and the Platina in the Mexican market.

Mexican media report that the company is building a new factory in the country with a capacity of 50,000 units a year, and the assembly of some motorcycles, strictly for Mexican consumption, will start soon. Olaf Sarabia, Director of Motodrive, has confirmed the new facility to local outlet El Universal. He said:

We haven't determined the complete amount of the investment, it's a totally new factory. We're on the process of installing the tools.

Meanwhile, Bajaj Auto registered a 10.35 per cent growth in the year-on-year sales in September 2018. The company sold 273,029 units in September 2018 as against 247,418 units in the corresponding month last year. The highest selling model during the month was the Platina that registered a growth of 41 per cent (67,450 in September 2018 v/s 47,712 in September 2017). The second highest selling product was the 150cc Pulsar that witnessed a growth of 38 per cent (64,900 in September 2018 v/s 47,025 in September 2017).

Bajaj’s flagship motorcycle, the Dominar 400, saw a fall in sales by 51 per cent, selling 1,095 units in September 2018 as against 2,250 units in the corresponding month last year. Bajaj Auto plans to introduce an updated version of the Dominar 400 shortly and further ahead plans a new 125 cc motorcycle brand and finally the next-gen Pulsar and Avenger in 2020.
