Bajaj may revive Chetak brand for re-entry in the scooter segment – Report

Bajaj Auto is planning to revive its old scooter brand name for the new product under the Urbanite make, reports BikeWale.

Bajaj Auto will first launch the petrol-powered scooter under the Urbanite brand. This scooter's electric variant may take 18 months (from now) to arrive.

The report suggests that the company has shortlisted three brand names for its upcoming scooter - Chetak, Legend and Stride. The report further adds that while Bajaj Auto is testing an electric two-wheeler, it will introduce a petrol-powered scooter first. Meanwhile, the electric vehicle may take another 18 months to arrive.

The leaked patent images have revealed a petrol-powered scooter with retro styling. Recently, test mules of the Bajaj electric scooter featuring retro styling were spotted in Pune. Spy images of the electric scooter have shown a pentagon-shaped headlight with curved lines. A similar design will most likely be seen on the petrol-powered scooter. The feature list will likely include LED headlight and tail lamp, backlit switchgear, semi-digital instrument console, under-seat USB charger and several storage solutions.

Bajaj Auto will most likely participate in the 125 cc segment as the 110 cc space is heavily dominated by the Honda Activa. Expect the performance numbers to be at par with its rivals such as the Suzuki Access 125, TVS Ntorq 125, Hero Destini/Maestro Edge 125 and the Honda Grazia - ~8 BHP of maximum power and ~8 Nm of peak torque. The BS-VI compliant motor will most definitely feature fuel-injection tech.

Anchoring department on the entry-level model will likely include drum brakes as standard, although a disc brake variant should be offered for customers demanding more braking power. The safety net of CBS will come as standard. Shock absorption duties will likely be handled by a single-sided front suspension with anti-dive and a single-sided sprint at the back.

Bajaj Auto has reportedly shortlisted three brand names for the upcoming scooter under the Urbanite make - Chetak, Legend and Stride.
