Report - Over 2k units of Bajaj RE60 already produced; Late 2014 launch in India
Bajaj is believed to have already produced 2,000-2,500 units of the RE60 quadricycle at its Waluj plant in Aurangabad. A source told the Autocar Professional that Bajaj has started producing the quadricycle in both left-hand drive and right-hand drive configurations, and is carrying out final stages of validation before exporting it.
Exports of the RE60 may start before its Indian launch, which will happen only after October 1 this year. The Ministry of Roads and Transport said that quadricycles can start plying on Indian roads after October 1, 2014, and Bajaj is reportedly considering an end-2014 market launch in India (between October-December).
The exact nature of exports (export markets and export quantity) remain unknown for now, though the company's managing director Rajiv Bajaj had mentioned Sri Lanka as a prospective market during the showcasing in January 2012.
In February this year at the Auto Expo, Bajaj confirmed the specifications of the RE60's powertrain. A 216 cc liquid-cooled, 4-valve, fuel-injected engine with triple spark will power the quadricycle. The company claims a top-speed of 70 km/h, and fuel efficiency of 37 km/l with CO2 emissions of 60 g/km.
The engine will be offered in LPG, CNG and gasoline variants paired to a 5-speed manual transmission which uses a dashboard-mounted gearlever.
