The motoring portal claims that the electric scooter will be available in Pune and Bengaluru in the first phase of operations. Regular readers would know that Bengaluru is the home turf of electric two-wheeler brands like Ather Energy. Pune, on the other hand, recently saw the arrival of the Revolt electric motorcycles. The source report further adds that Bajaj Auto will set up charging points at every customer’s home, although the service will cost extra.

As reported earlier this week, Bajaj Auto has sent out ‘Block Your Date’ invites for an event scheduled in Delhi. While the company has remained tight-lipped about any further details about the product, we expect to see the Urbanite branded vehicle(s) to arrive at the aforementioned event. Bajaj Auto may also revive its iconic scooter brand, Chetak as an electric scooter. Bajaj Auto has shortlisted three names for its upcoming scooters – Chetak, Legend and Stride, claimed a report in May this year.

Rakesh Sharma, Director, Bajaj Auto, had stated in February this year that the Urbanite brand would arrive within 9 months, and it seems that the Pune-based two-wheeler brand is running on schedule. The products from the Urbanite electric vehicle brand would be distributed through an all-new network.

The electric scooters have been spied on various occasions in the past, revealing various styling and hardware details. The feature list will include LED lighting, backlit switchgear and retro styling. The cockpit will include a circular instrument console, which will most likely be a full-digital unit with Bluetooth connectivity. The electric scooter should also feature a USB charger.

Hardware specifications, as seen in the leaked sketches and spy photographs, will include a single-sided front suspension with anti-dive function and multi-spoke alloy wheels. Front disc brake should come as standard although we cannot say the same about the rear. Many electric two-wheelers come with disc brakes on both wheels as standard, and Bajaj Auto should follow a similar strategy.

Bajaj Urbanite Electric Scooter Front Profile
Bajaj Auto may also introduce petrol-powered scooters to tap on the growing 125 cc space of the Indian market.

In related news, Bajaj Auto is working with KTM to develop performance electric motorcycles. The co-developed electric motorcycles will NOT be a part of the Urbanite brand. The performance-spec products from the Bajaj-KTM will arrive by 2022.
