Following an agreement with Toyota Motor Europe to supply 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter diesel engines back in March 2012, BMW's first batch of 1.6-liter diesel engines will be fitted to the 2014 Toyota Verso, with production scheduled to begin in January 2014 at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey’s Adapazari plant.

BMW's 1.6L diesel engine now powers the 2014 Toyota Verso.

The 1.6-liter D-4D engine produces a healthy 112 bhp at 4,000 rpm. Torque is at its peak of 270 Nm when the tacho needle bobs between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm. The engine's CO2 output stands at 119 g/km.

The current gen Verso has been sold in Europe since 2009. However, it is, at present, being sold with an in-house 2.0-liter diesel as the minimum offering. With a length of 4,460 mm, width of 1,790 mm and a height of 1,620 mm, the car is also exported or made in South Africa, China, Israel and Japan.

The 1.6-liter diesel would be the first amongst two engines and this will likely be followed by a 2.0-liter engine, as per the agreement. After signing this MoU in March 2012, the two companies once more came together to sign another agreement. The mainstays of this agreement include the development of a fuel cell system. The two companies will share technologies and jointly develop fuel cell systems.
