Frankfurt Live - BMW X5 eDrive Concept graces the stage

The BMW X5 eDrive Concept has been unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show today.

Though termed as a concept, the hybrid SUV seems to be production ready. The X5 eDrive is powered by a four-cylinder TwinPower turbocharged petrol engine which is assisted by an electric motor. The motor gets its supply of electricity from a Li-ion battery pack that is stored in a crash-safe compartment underneath the boot floor, and without jeopardizing the boot space.

The power output of the engine is not discussed but BMW says the electric motor produces 95bhp. The plug-in hybrid can operate on pure electricity for up to 30km at speeds not exceeding 120kph. The overall fuel economy stands at 3.8L/100km (26.31kpl). The CO2 emissions are contained at 90g/km, which is commendable for an SUV this big.

The concept advertises its low carbon footprint with its i-Blue-painted kidney grille and air intakes on the bumpers. Specially designed roof rails and aerodynamically optimized 21-inch alloy wheels add more individuality. Not to mention the charging socket on the front left fender.

BMW hasn't announced whether or not the X5 eDrive would be entering production. Given the impressive performance statistics, we think the company should consider launching the clean and green SUV.
