BMW has announced an investment of $1 billion (INR 5,987 crore) into the Spartanburg, South Carolina plant (USA) to boost annual production to 450,000 vehicles by the end of 2016. This is the fifth time the plant is expanding in its 20-year existence.

The start of production of the BMW X4 was another celebration at the announcement.

Some of the extra production capacity will be utilized to make the all-new BMW X7 that would be made exclusively at the plant. BMW didn't provide any more details, but reports describe the X7 as a three-row SUV that will take on the Audi Q7 and the Mercedes GL Class, and is based on the platform that generates the next gen 5 Series and 7 Series. The car would be sold globally.

BMW did not say when the car will come out, but it is unlikely to expect it before 2017. Besides the X7, BMW confirmed that an X5 Plug-in hybrid (showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year) would be made in Spartanburg in the near future.
