BS-VI Aprilia SR range to feature Bluetooth connectivity - Report

New details about the BS-VI compliant Aprilia SR range have surfaced online. The next-generation SR range, according to a new report from BikeWale, would pack Bluetooth connectivity. The updated SR range, equipped with the new features, would arrive in the Q1 of 2020.

Piaggio may develop a smartphone app to work with the Bluetooth-enabled instrument console on the next-generation Aprilia SR range.

The motoring portal reports that the next-generation Aprilia SR 125, SR 125 Storm and the SR 150, apart from the Bluetooth enabled instrument console, will pack features like LED headlight, LED tail lamp and revised graphics. Currently, the Bluetooth feature is available only on the TVS Ntorq 125 in the 125 cc scooter space. The system on the Ntorq 125 works with a smartphone app to access various functions like caller ID and navigation among other features. Aprilia may also develop a smartphone app that will work with the Bluetooth enabled instrument console.

The report adds that the updated features would justify the upcoming price hike that will come with the BS-VI models. Piaggio reportedly plans to update its Vespa and Aprilia range of scooters with BS-VI compliance by January next year. The BS-VI products will use fuel injection system and ECU.

Apart from the addition of the new features to the SR range, the company will also introduce a higher displacement model that will arrive between the 150 cc to 200 cc segment. Piaggio will use the newly developed engine in the sub-200 cc segment on Vespa and Aprilia scooters. The motor will be designed specifically for the Indian market in the R&D centre in Italy.

Diego Graffi, Managing Director and CEO, Piaggio Vehicles, confirmed the sub-200 cc engine in an interview last month. Graffi said:

It is going to be a big jump from what we currently see in the Indian market and will also preview what could come in the market afterwards. Even though that kind of displacement for scooter application may still be too early, but something between 150-200cc is very much possible to happen, not just from us but even from the competition.

Other features on the next-gen Aprilia scooters will include LED headlight and tail lamp.

The Aprilia branded scooter with the new engine will arrive by the end of 2020, while a Vespa product with the same motor will come in 2021. Regular readers would know that the Ministry of Road and Transport reportedly plans to implement mass electrification of all two-wheelers under 150 cc of displacement by 2025. Thus, other manufacturers too would bring their own products in the 150-200 cc segment.
