Rendering - Chevrolet's Maruti Swift rival on the Amber platform

GM is working on a new platform codenamed 'Amber' for emerging markets that would underpin a Maruti Swift sized hatchback, a compact sedan (sub-4 m in India's case) and a compact SUV (previewed by the Chevrolet Adra Concept).

The Amber platform would have Brazil, Russia, India, Thailand and Mexico as its primary markets. Here is a speculative rendering of the Amber-based hatchback by Noticias Automotivas which the Brazilian media likes to call the Chevrolet Jade.

Chevrolet Jade rendering on Amber platform
The Chevrolet Jade hatchback based on the Amber platform is not due until 2018.

The low cost hatchback would adopt a new design formed around Chevrolet's traditional twin port grille. The real deal could look like an expanded Chevrolet Beat (called as the Spark in international markets).

The Amber platform based products would be designed by GM Europe and engineered by GM Brazil which has to its credit, the Chevrolet Spin compact MPV and the Onix hatchback, two super-hit models in South America. GM Brazil's proposed plant in the city of Sao Jose dos Campos is expected to be the main base for the new high volume model which is touted to replace the Chevrolet Celta in the country.

Chevrolet Adra production render
The Amber will also underpin the production Chevrolet Adra compact SUV.

In India, the Chevrolet Jade could replace the struggling Chevrolet Sail U-VA. Details are scare but the first Amber product is not expected before 2018. Till then GM India has to keep the ball rolling by refreshing existing products.

Competitors: Hyundai Grand i10, Maruti Swift, Ford Figo
