The Chevrolet Enjoy is China's fourth best selling vehicle in 2012
Many readers were shocked to read that the plain vanilla Chevrolet Sail, designed by GM-SAIC, is China's second best selling car in 2012.
The Sail runs shoulders with the Chevrolet Cruze and Buick Excelle, cars from higher segments, at the very top of the pecking order.
Production of the Sail has commenced in India, and the market introduction is just weeks away now. GM India has made changes to the car's configuration to suit the Indian market such as transplanting a diesel engine and modifying the suspension system.
GM India's forthcoming new product launch is the Enjoy MPV, showcased earlier this year at the Delhi Auto Expo. Believe it or not, the Enjoy (locally called as the Wuling Honguang) is China's fourth best selling vehicle brand in 2012. The company has dispatched 196,131 units of this vehicle this year to homes across the dragon land.
The Sail (185,317 vehicles) and Enjoy (196,131 examples) together are helping GM lead the volumes game in China. The significant contributions from two other minivans, Wuling Rongguang and Wuling Sunshine, helped SAIC-GM crack 1 million units already in 2012.
These vehicles are clear in their ambition - they don't offer any frills or thrills. They are simple and straightforward designs, engineered to provide the best space and fuel economy.
We can't wait to see what is the kind of acceptance the simpleton SAIC cars have in India.
