Chevrolet plotting a Honda City rival for 2018 - Report

According to Motoroctane, General Motors will be expanding the Chevrolet portfolio with at least five new models by 2017. Along with that, the company is rumored to also introduce a global C-segment sedan that will slot under the Chevrolet Cruze.

In Africa, GM kept the Optra nameplate alive by rebadging the Chinese Boajun 630, which competes in the C-Segment.

The report states that Chevrolet has begun testing the model, and will be unveiled globally towards the end of 2016. Given the volumes to be had in the C-segment sedan of India, it would be surprising if Chevrolet gave it a miss.

The report also speculates that the India-spec model will pack a turbo petrol unit or a diesel option. GM India has said that it will only operate the plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra, and all future models would have to be manufactured at this site.

If launched in India, the C-sedan would slot above the Chevrolet Beat sub-4m sedan that is scheduled for sale in 2017.

The model will slot between the 2017 Chevrolet Beat notchback and the next generation Chevrolet Cruze, which will debut in India in 2017. GM India's foray into the C-Segment was futile in the past, with the Optra SRV premium hatchback and the Optra sedan failing and facing the axe after an initial blitz.
