GM India will also launch a Spark TCDi (diesel)

General Motors' diesel plans are on track with the company offering locally made diesel engines starting with the Beat. The Beat will get a 1.0-liter CRDI engine, 936cc engine to be precise, delivering 57bhp power and 140-150Nm of torque.

Now another interesting development has been reported by WheelsUnplugged. In an interaction with Mr P Balendran, GM India's Vice President, the diesel question was raised by WU. Mr Balendran is believed to have said that Spark will get the Smartech engine along with the 1-liter diesel engine.

The Smartech is a 1.2-liter petrol engine designed to suit Indian conditions better. It was designed and engineered in GM's Powertrain center in Bangalore. It was introduced on the Chevrolet Beat LPG earlier this month and will follow in other Chevrolet small cars.

No where in the world will you find a diesel Spark or Beat.

The GM Technical Centre in Bangalore will also prepare a new vehicle architecture by the end of 2012. This architecture could give rise to host of compact vehicles in the near future for emerging markets.
