China-made VW Teramont (VW Atlas) production underway

Expected to reach showrooms in March 2017.

The SAIC-VW JV has commenced mass production of the VW Teramont (Chinese version of the VW Atlas), and released photographs of the first example rolling out of the plant's production line.

Barring the VW Touran MPV, the Teramont will also be the only VW to offer third row seating.

The Teramont will be VW's largest vehicle to go on sale in China, measuring 5,039 mm in length, 1,989 mm in width, 1,773 mm in height and 2,980 mm in wheelbase. Barring the VW Touran MPV, the Teramont will also be the only VW to offer third row seating (a pair of flat-foldable seats).

The exterior looks largely identical to the US-spec VW Atlas, save for chrome-finished vertical slats in the grille, new alloy rim designs and Teramont-engraved chrome garnish at the back. The Teramont showcased at its world debut in Guangzhou last month featured an all black interior with chrome and wood trim, while the international spec Atlas has a dual tone beige and black interior. Both drawing cues from the CrossBlue concept, the Teramont gets a slightly smaller touchscreen system and redesigned gear selector.

The Teramont's engine lineup includes a 2.0L TFSI engine in two power outputs: 186 hp & 320 Nm and 220 hp & 350 Nm, and a 2.5L V6 TFSI with 299 hp & 500 Nm. A seven-speed DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive system are standard in all variants of the Teramont.
