IAB Report - Datsun Go production to start on Feb 4; Go+ and I2 unveiling at Auto Expo

Reliable sources confirmed to IndianAutosBlog.com today that series production of the first Datsun model, the Datsun Go, would begin in India on the 4th of February at the Renault-Nissan JV's Oragadam plant in Chennai. The vehicle would launch on the market within weeks, retailing out of 145 Nissan dealerships in a 'shop-in-shop' concept.

Despite being a three-row car, the Go+ will qualify for small car tax benefits with its 3.95m length.

Another development Indian Autos Blog learns is that Datsun will unveil the Go+ and the I2 in India on the 5th of February at the Auto Expo to be held in Greater Noida.

The Go+ is the second Datsun model that will launch in India in 2014, while the I2, a Maruti Alto rival underpinned by a new platform, which is currently under development at Renault-Nissan's technical center in Chennai, would be a concept car at the exhibition.

The I2 is the third Datsun model planned for India in 2015.

Revealed in Indonesia last year, the Go+ is a stretched Go with three row seating. It shares the mechanical gear with the Go, relying on a 1.2-liter petrol engine that produces 68 PS of power and 104 Nm of torque to turn its wheels.

Datsun has not planned a diesel version or an automatic transmission, though these features maybe part of future plans. Datsun officials had earlier said that they had no interest in entering the entry-sedan segment in India.
