EICMA 2019: New Benelli Leoncino 800 Trail makes debut

After the standard Leoncino 800, Benelli has unveiled the Trail-badged version of its new 800 cc scrambler range. The new Benelli Leoncino 800 Trail receives several styling upgrades over the standard model that gives it an enhanced off-road persona.

The Benelli Leoncino 800 Trail features a 19-inch front wheel, tall-set exhaust and a headlight cowl.

The off-road-focused styling is brought out by the tall-set double exhaust and the 19-inch front wheel. In comparison, the standard model uses a conventional position for the exhaust and a 17-inch front wheel. Both variants use cross-spoke wheel design that enables the installation of tubeless tyres. The wheels are wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR (120/70-19 front and 170/60-17 rear) tyres.

Benelli has also updated the suspension setup and the new Leoncino 800 Trail uses Marzocchi-sourced 50 mm inverted front fork with adjustable rebound, compression and pre-load. The Trail model boasts a longer suspension travel (140 mm) than the road-focused version (130 mm). Similarly, the rear mono-shock features an adjustable spring preload and rebound damping and extra travel (140 mm).

The longer suspension travel has raised the seat height by a marginal 18 mm over the road model. The Leoncino 800 Trail’s seat height is 818 mm (vs 800 mm on the road model).

Styling upgrade over the standard model includes a headlight fairing that features the Leoncino series arc. The new double exhaust, as mentioned before, gets a higher position. The exhaust was developed specifically for the Trail version. The number plate holder and the heat shield on the side further enhance the off-road look of the Leoncino 800 Trail. The design of the steel tank is identical on both variants. The Trail model comes with a “Trail” badge on the tank.

Mechanical specifications on the Trail model is identical to the road-going version. The 754 cc liquid-cooled, parallel twin-cylinder, 8-valve, DOHC engine that pumps out 81.6 hp (60 kW) of max power at 9,000 rpm and a peak torque of 67 Nm (6.8 kgm) at 6,500 rpm. The 6-speed gearbox features a slipper clutch.

The braking setup, too, is similar to the road-spec model. The Brembo braking system includes twin 320 mm diameter semi-floating discs with four-piston radially mount mono-block callipers at the front and a single 260 mm disc with a double piston calliper at the rear.

Similar to the standard model, the Benelli Leoncino 800 Trail uses cross-spoke wheel design that enables the installation of tubeless tyres.
