World Exclusive: From Duke 490 to RC 490, KTM to launch 5 twin-cylinder ‘490’ models

Back in December 2018, KTM CEO Stefan Pierer confirmed that a 490 cc parallel-twin cylinder engine that will be manufactured by Bajaj Auto in India is in the works. Now, Indian Autos Blog has learnt that five KTM 490 twin-cylinder models are in the pipeline.

The 490 cc parallel-twin cylinder motor on the upcoming range shall deliver close to 55-60 hp of peak power.

The KTM 490 line-up will comprise the following five products:

  • KTM 490 Duke
  • KTM RC 490
  • KTM 490 Adventure
  • KTM 490 Supermoto (490 SMC? Maybe)
  • KTM 490 Enduro (490 ECX? Maybe)

The 490 Duke, RC 490 and the 490 Adventure will be built around a tweaked version of the existing trellis frame to accommodate the slightly wider engine. Styling cues, hardware specifications and features on the three models may not be very different from their single-cylinder counterpart from the upcoming 2020 line-up to keep the development costs low. Thus, we expect to see features such as a similar full-LED headlight and a full-colour TFT-display with Bluetooth connectivity on the parallel-twin cylinder powered range.

The Supermoto and the Enduro models may get a reworked version of the chassis that underpins the existing models. KTM’s supermoto range include the 690 SMC R that’s built around a Chrome-moly tubular space frame. The enduro models, on the other hand, use a central-tube frame with double-cradle.

The suspension setup on all models will include inverted front forks and a rear monoshock. The enduro, supermoto and the adventure will most likely carry a longer wheel travel rating than the roadster and the supersport. The wheel size will also differ based on the model, and the adventure and enduro bikes shall come with a larger front diameter. Braking department will comprise disc brakes on both ends. The anchoring setup will be governed by a switchable dual-channel ABS.

In terms of mechanical specifications, the upcoming 490 cc parallel-twin cylinder motor will most definitely feature liquid-cooling, 8-valves, DOHC setup. The performance figures shall remain identical throughout the 490 range while the gear ratios and engine mapping will be different on different models to match their respective characters. Considering the output on the 390 cc single-cylinder (43 hp), the peak power figure from the 490 cc parallel-twin may come close to 55-60 hp. The motor will be linked to a six-speed transmission that will benefit from an assists and a slipper clutch.

The 490 cc motor will propel five KTM 490 products.
