Ahead of its debut at the 2017 IAA in Frankfurt, Highsnobiety has acquired high resolution images of a pre-production BMW X2. Even with the the urban-themed wrap, this is our best look at the production-spec Range Rover Evoque rival.

As expected, the exterior is a watered-down version of the Concept X2 from the 2016 Paris Motor Show, identical to the patent sketches that surfaced last month. It's unmistakably a BMW design, although there are a few exclusive touches. The kidney grilles are inverted, the 'hoffmeister' kink has been slightly redesigned, and it has the BMW roundel logo on both C-pillars.

Although it may look like a large hatchback in photos, the X2 will have crossover bits and chunkier tires. With a rising waist line, small rear windows and raked windscreen, we reckon the rear visibility will be limited. As for the interior, it could be an adaptation of the BMW X1's interior, but with funkier trim and materials. What this car isn't, is a sloping roof variant of the BMW X1.

The X2 will be based on the FWD UKL1 platform shared with the BMW X1. Engine lineup will include a range the three cylinder and four cylinder TwinPower motors displacing 1.5L and 2.0L, respectively. The BMW X2 M35i range-topper will pack an M-fettled 2.0L turbo engine that makes 296 bhp. Transmission options can be 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic and an 8-speed automatic. BMW's X Drive AWD system will be fitted as standard in select models.
