Ford India has slashed prices for its Classic sedan to the tune of Rs 65,000 on some variants, taking the price below the psychological Rs 5,00,000 mark, to make it one of the cheapest sedans in India.

According to a report on CarToq.com, the Classic sedan now gets a price tag of Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the base 1.6-liter petrol LXi variant. The Classic, a driver's delight, is a previous generation Ford Fiesta that was repositioned to a lower segment in April 2012.

2014 Ford Fiesta Classic prices (ex-showroom Bengaluru)

Ford Classic 1.6L Duratec Petrol

  • LXi - 518,620 rupees
  • CLXi - 589,865 rupees
  • Titanium - 671,286 rupees

Ford Classic 1.4L Duratorq Diesel

  • LXi - 651,033 rupees
  • CLXi - 699,886 rupees
  • Titanium - 773,166 rupees

Ford India sold just 50 units of the Classic sedan in December 2013.

Measuring 4,282 mm in length, 1,686 mm in width, 1,468 mm in height and 2,486 mm in wheelbase, the Classic is considerably bigger than sub-4meter cars like the Honda Amaze and Maruti Swift Dzire. However size hasn't given it the edge in beating new B-segment sedans that have younger looks, better features and higher fuel efficiency.

Ford had recorded poor sales for the Classic sedan for most of 2013, with sales not crossing the 1,000 unit per month mark throughout the year. The low-point was in December 2013 when only 50 units were sold.

A recent development regarding Ford is also the fact that Ford's dealers are trying to nudge those still waiting for their EcoSport to cancel their orders and book other Ford cars.
