Will be based on the Honda NSX's platform.

Based on a leaked patent sketch of Honda's "baby NSX", Motoring Australia posted a render of the mid-engined sports car that will slot under the hybrid-powered Honda/Acura NSX.

The baby NSX will reportedly compete with the Alfa Romeo 4C, Porsche Cayman, and the Lotus Elise.

News on the development and production of the smaller NSX emerged earlier this year, which will slot in the middle of a three-model mid-engined sports car family. Honda is yet to confirm plans.

Insiders have suggested that it will be based on the Honda NSX's platform, but will pack a less-expensive and less-powerful drivetrain. It could get the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine from the Honda Civic Type-R paired to an electric motor. Power will be sent to all four wheels via an SH-AWD (Super Handling – AWD) system with all-wheel steer.

At the moment, it's undecided if Honda will manufacture the baby NSX alongside the regular model in Honda's plant in Marysville, Ohio, or at its sole mid-engine vehicle production line in Yokkaichi near Suzuka, where the S660, Vamos and Acty mini-cars roll out. When the "born-again Honda S2000" emerges on the US market "within 6 months," as per the Motoring report, it will compete against the Alfa Romeo 4C, Porsche Cayman, and the Lotus Elise.
