IAB Report - Honda City production relocated to Tapukara to meet Mobilio's demand

Honda India stops production of the new City in August to shift tools from Greater Noida to Tapukara.

Overwhelmed by a strong response to the newly launched Honda Mobilio and a sustained demand for the new Honda City, Honda Cars India announced this afternoon that it is shifting the entire production of the new City from Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh to Tapukara, Rajasthan.

Honda India has sold 53,605 units of the (new) City in the first seven months of 2014 at a monthly average of 7,658 units and has already earned 50 percent of the C-Segment market share. The Mobilio which was launched on July 23 has garnered 10,000 bookings since.

The Honda City will be made alongside the Amaze at the Tapukara plant.

In order to facilitate the shift, Honda has halted the production of the new City in August. Production would resume in September, at Tapukara.

The move, Honda explains, is to ensure maximized production and timely delivery of both cars. The Mobilio, which is made at the Greater Noida plant will be benefited by the additional production capacity that is made available due to the City's production shift.

The Tapukara plant which began vehicle manufacturing operations in February 2014 has an annual production capacity of 1,20,000 units and is currently running on single shift, producing the Amaze. The full fledged manufacturing facility includes vital functions such as powertrain shop, weld shop, engine and frame assembly, forging, press shop, paint shop, plastic moulding and engine testing facility.
