Production-spec Honda Concept D flagship SUV begins testing - Report

The production model of the Concept D will be the flagship SUV for Honda in China.

Honda had displayed the radical-looking Concept D at Auto Shanghai 2015. The concept previewed a new SUV model for the brand, the test mule for which has been spotted by spies.

When the concept was unveiled, it had a very edgy and futuristic design. All that has changed as the test mule spotted seems to have a more conventional exterior. The prototype had distinct features such as a large U-shaped grille, big air intakes, sharply raked roofline and C-pillar.

The test mule wears heavy camouflage and not many details are visible. What can be seen though, is that it has witnessed many changes from the Concept, starting with the front that gets a clamshell bonnet, redesigned headlights and a more conventional grille.

Honda said at the unveiling that the Concept D will be made into a production model that "offers high-quality driving and a spacious cabin."

The sides receive less muscular wheel arches, conventional side mirrors, and a more upright and thicker C-pillar. The rear gets a re-profiled bumper and flat twin exhausts, and is more sedate than the concept.
