Honda is now the largest two-wheeler brand in Tamil Nadu

Honda is aiming to sell 6 million units in India in the financial year 2017-18.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt Ltd has become the largest selling two-wheeler brand in Tamil Nadu. The state is the country’s third largest two-wheeler market.

Tamil Nadu is the country's second largest market for scooters, a segment led by the Honda Activa.

Sales in Tamil Nadu grew by 34 percent for Honda and every third customers in the state buys a Honda badged two-wheeler. Honda is already the largest selling two-wheeler brand in Maharashtra, Kerala, Gujarat and Karnataka. Mr YS Guleria, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, HMSI said

Within regions, the more progressive South and West regions are today leading the scooterisation of India. As the second largest scooter market in India, Tamil Nadu is clearly a trend-setting state. There is a dramatic evolution of two-wheeler industry in Tamil Nadu. Now nearly every 2nd customer chooses to ride home on a scooter. Mopeds which always had a stronghold in Tamil Nadu have seen a sharp drop in contribution every year. Now only 1 in 10 two-wheelers sold in the state is moped.

Composition of scooters has reached almost 50 percent in the two-wheeler market of Tamil Nadu. The Honda Activa, India’s largest selling automatic scooter is now also the largest selling two-wheeler in the country, having overtaken Hero Splendor in the financial year 2016-17 by 1.97 lakh units.

The Honda Activa outsold the Hero Splendor in the last fiscal by 1.97 lakhs, in India.

Honda has also opened a zonal office in Coimbatore, their second in Tamil Nadu. The company had inaugurated a traffic park in the city (11th such entity in India) back in January 2017.
