Could sit below the hardcore performance-spec 'R' model.

Let's face it, Hyundai has never been known for its driver-oriented products, but what a total change in paradigm has the recent times seen. Right from entering World Rally Championship to announcing its 'N' and 'R' sub-brands, the Korean carmaker clearly knows that its customers and fans want fun-to-drive cars, too.

The 'R' specification could offer the extra visual pop with a moderate step-up in performance.

And what could be a better example to start working on than the i20? Apart from its presence in WRC, the midsized hatchback qualifies for the premium hatchback category, comes with great features, and targets the same crowd who would also consider cars like the Fiat Punto, Volkswagen Polo, and Maruti Suzuki Swift. And here' what it could look like.

Illustrated by RM Design, here is a rendering of a hotter i20, in R-Spec trim. The sportier version could sit right between the regular i20 (the one for the Indian market is sold as 'Elite i20') and the out-and-out WRC-replica N-spec model believed to be making an appearance soon with a 250 PS engine. Hyundai has already started rolling out the R-Spec trims on cars like the Veloster and Genesis, so an R-Spec i20 seems entirely possible.

Another variant of the i20 family would be the faux crossover that competes with the Toyota Etios Cross.

It is too soon to say whether Hyundai will bring it to India or not, but it indeed be a great way to expand the i20 hatchback range globally, especially with a pseudo-crossover, and a three-door version planned to be added to the range next year.
