Less than a year after the petrol- and diesel-powered Hyundai Kona in mid-2017, Hyundai has revealed the India-bound Hyundai Kona Electric. The new EV will have its stage debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show next month.
Hyundai has introduced the Hyundai Kona Electric in two models: Short-range Battery/Motor and Long-range Battery/Motor.
The Short-range Battery/Motor model has an electric motor that generates 135 PS and 395 Nm of torque. It has a 39.2 kWh Lithium-ion Polymer battery that offers a range of up to 300 km. Hyundai claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 167 km/h.
Getting the 39.2 kWh battery fully charged using a standard AC charger takes 6 hours 10 minutes*. Charging the battery to 80% level using a 100 kW DC fast charger takes just 54 minutes*. The battery consumption rating of the basic model is 14.8 kWh/100 km.
The Long-range Battery/Motor model employs an electric motor that delivers 204 PS and 395 Nm of torque. It has a 64 kWh Lithium-ion Polymer battery that provides a range of up to 470 km. The 0-100 km/h acceleration time reduces to 7.6 seconds in this model, but the top speed remains the same - 167 km/h.
Fully charging the 64 kWh battery using a standard AC charger takes 9 hours 40 minutes*. Using a 100 kW DC fast charger, it takes only 54 minutes* to charge the battery to 80% level. The battery consumption rating of the Long-range Battery/Motor model is 15.2 kWh/100 km.
Measuring 4,180 mm in length and 1,570 mm in height, the Hyundai Kona Electric is 15 mm longer and 20 mm taller than the regular Hyundai Kona. The pure electric variant has a cleaner design. The main exterior design elements are the closed grille and lateral air curtains at the front, which not only make the SUV look unique but also enhance aerodynamics. Inside, features worth noting are a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, electronic parking brake and a dedicated centre console, which combines the buttons for operating the car with the shift-by-wire module.
