Compact SUV generated Ford India an excellent local and export business.

Ford India has announced that it has sold over 200,000 units of the India-made Ford EcoSport. The figure includes both domestic sales and units that have been exported. The company announced that just over 55 percent of this figure has been sold in India. In August last year, the company said that it had sold 1 lakh units of the India-made SUV.

Even though the revised 2016 Ford EcoSport has been announced without a spare wheel in Europe, the India-spec model will continue with the external spare wheel.

The compact SUV was launched in the middle of 2013 and was a runaway success almost immediately, with the company bagging 60,000 bookings in under a month of its launch. However, due to export commitments and production constraints, Ford India temporarily stopped taking bookings for some of the variants of the model.

With export markets in Africa, Asia Pacific and European countries being catered to by the company's manufacturing facility in Chennai, the production of the EcoSport for the domestic market took a hit. The figures reflect that, with around 112,000 units out of the 200,000 being sold in India.

The EcoSport also triggered a barrage of models in the compact SUV space, including the Mahindra Quanto. The space is still not populated as other segments, with several models like the Mahindra S101, Chevrolet Adra, Maruti YBA, Tata Nexon etc. still in development stages.
