Jeep India to initially import cars, targets sales of 2,000 units - Report

To be sold through Fiat outlets initially.

The forthcoming Auto Expo 2016 will finally see the launch of FCA's Jeep brand in India. The SUV-specialist, which was initially supposed to launch in India in 2014 has seen delays in account of "unfavorable currency exchange" and "general industry slowdown".

The Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee SRT are expected to be the first models for Jeep India.

Ahead of their launch, Jeep has also setup its Indian website, jeep-india.com, which lists models such as the Wrangler Unlimited, the Grand Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee SRT. These three products are expected to launch the brand in the country, and will be imported through the CBU route, Mike Manley, Jeep Chief Executive told Reuters.

Initially, the brand does not plan on assembling products at Fiat's Ranjangaon plant, which is a joint venture between Fiat and Tata Motors. Since the vehicles will be imported as fully built units, the brand expects to sell only 1,500-2,000 units in the first year. Also, initially, Mr. Manley said that Jeep products will be retailed through 15-30 existing Fiat dealerships in the 10-15 largest cities.

Jeep will initially be a niche brand in India before the business is further developed, Mr. Manley concluded. Jeep is working on a new C-Segment SUV codenamed the Jeep 551. The 551, which will be a replacement for the Patriot and Compass models, will be manufactured in India and exported to primarily right-hand drive markets from 2017.
