Kawasaki Ninja 300 recalled over front-brake master cylinder issue

Kawasaki India has recalled Ninja 300 motorcycles. The affected motorcycles suffer from a faulty front brake master cylinder, which could lead to a brake failure, thus resulting in a crash.

Kawasaki dealers have started to contact the owners and will replace the faulty front brake master cylinder free of cost.

Kawasaki has begun the recall initiative and is replacing the front brake master cylinder free of cost. Dealerships are contacting the owners to schedule an appointment and get the faulty unit replaced. The motorcycles affected by the recall are the heavily localised units that were launched at a more competitive price (INR 2.98 lakh*). Heavy localisation of components also brought down the prices of the spares, thus reducing the maintenance cost heavily.

The lower price and affordable maintenance resulted in a growth in demand and the localised Ninja 300 has been fuelling the sales of the Japanese two-wheeler brand in the Indian market. In May this year, Kawasaki sold just as many units of the Ninja 300 as TVS sold of the Apache RR 310. Check out the six-month sales performance of the Kawasaki Ninja 300 in the table below:

Month Latest Sales Previous Sales Percentage Change
May 174 2 8,600%
April 95 2 4,650%
March 165 115 43%
February 135 10 1,250%
January 186 24 675%
December 220 27 715%

Before heavy localisation of components, the Ninja 300 was sold at INR 3.60 lakh*. The safety net of dual-channel ABS was not included then. The company's recent price revision did not affect the Ninja 300 and the motorcycle continues to retail at INR 2.98 lakh*.

In May this year, Kawasaki added two new colour options to the Ninja 300 to further boost the sales. The fully-faired motorcycle is powered by a 296 cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin cylinder engine that delivers 39 PS of peak power at 11,000 rpm and 27 Nm of maximum torque at 10,000 rpm. The motor is linked to a 6-speed gearbox that features an assist and slipper clutch. Hardware specifications include disc brakes on the front and rear wheels, telescopic front forks and a monoshock rear suspension.
