KTM 125 Duke outruns Yamaha MT-15 in May 2019 sales
The KTM 125 Duke has outrun the Yamaha MT-15’s sales for the first time since the launch of the latter. The naked roadster variant of the Yamaha YZF-R15 V3.0 showed promising numbers in its first month, clocking 5,203 unit sales. The figure came down to 3,823 in April, and further down to 2,048 units the last month. Meanwhile, the KTM 125 Duke, which trailed for the first two months with 3,069 and 2,199 unit sales, registered 2,228 units in May.

Do note that the KTM 125 Duke, which was launched at an ex-showroom price of INR 1,18,163*, received its first hike in April, of approximately INR 6,835. Earlier this month, the Austrian naked roadster got another price increase of INR 5,000, and the bike now retails at INR 1.30 lakh*. In comparison, the Yamaha MT-15 is available at INR 1.36 lakh*.
KTM’s recent price hike may affect the sales of the naked roadster in the current month, and the Yamaha MT-15 may regain its lead in June.
The KTM 125 Duke has a relatively lower displacement and is not good on performance as the Yamaha MT-15. Its 124.71 cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 4-valve FI engine makes 15.2 PS at 9,250 rpm and 12 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm. The Yamaha MT-15, on the other hand, draws 19.3 PS at 10,000 rpm and 14.7 Nm of torque at 8,500 rpm from its 155 cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, SOHC, 4-valve with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) and fuel injection tech. The Yamaha MT-15 and the Yamaha YZF-R15 V3.0 are the only motorcycles with VVA tech in their respective segments. The KTM 125 Duke and Yamaha MT-15 both use a six-speed gearbox, but the latter benefits from an assists and slipper clutch.
The KTM offering uses a premium suspension setup, featuring upside-down telescopic forks at the front as against the conventional units on the Yamaha MT-15. The international-spec MT-15, for reference, uses upside-down forks. Both motorcycles use a monoshock suspension at the back. Braking department comprises disc brake on both wheels while the safety net includes single-channel ABS. Surprisingly, Yamaha uses a dual-channel ABS on the YZF-R15 V3.0.
