Lambretta to enter India with two models in 2020 – Report

In December 2018, Italian two-wheeler brand Lambretta had expressed its interest in entering India. In a new development, a report from BikeAdvice says that the company will launch two models here next year, to begin with: Lambretta Electric and Super Lambretta.

The products from Lambretta will compete with the current range of Vespa scooters in the Indian market. Both the models will be displayed at Auto Expo 2020. In fact, the Lambretta Electric will make its world debut at Auto Expo 2020. It is currently being developed in Milan, Italy.

Lambretta has joined hands with Lohia Auto and Bird Group for the Indian market, and it reportedly plans to set up an assembly line in the country. It could import the scooters arrive via the CKD route in the initial phase and then switch to full-fledged production. It will have to heavily localise the electric scooter to receive benefit under FAME scheme, though. The Super Lambretta will be offered in the premium price bracket and it will be tailor-made for the Indian market. It will feature bigger dimensions than any of Lambretta's earlier scooters. Standard features of the upcoming models will most likely include full-LED headlight, semi-digital instrument console and CBS tech.

Regular readers would know that the two-wheeler brand displayed three scooters, the Lambretta V50, V125, and V200 Special, at EICMA 2017. The 125 cc segment of the Indian market is a lucrative space, and so, the V125 would be an ideal product for the country. Do note that Vespa operates in the 125-150 cc segment here. The V series from Lambretta is manufactured in Taiwan. The Lambretta V125 uses a Euro-IV 124.7 cc engine that makes 10 bhp of power and 9.20 Nm of peak torque. CBS is standard, which makes it already compliant with the safety norms in the country.
