VW launched the first generation New Beetle in India in 2009, and tried their best in setting up a niche hatchback segment. However, its chic styling and high price tag did not appeal to prospective customers. So, VW India were forced to bin the New Beetle as soon as stocks ran out.

With the Mini Cooper garnering interest in the niche hatchback segment, VW will also join the bandwagon, and re-launch the Beetle, which is now being sold in its second generation across the globe. Introduced in 2011, the latest model retains the iconic silhouette, but has been updated to look more dynamic and muscular than before. The styling is more angular, with a raked roofline, and comes with a spoiler integrated at the back.

The 2012 VW Beetle that was brought to the country for homologation packed a 1.4-liter TSI engine, similar to the one in the VW Jetta. A diesel motor could also be offered, given that the previous model had such an option.
