The Mahindra Marazzo's platform has a high usage of aluminium which reportedly makes it lighter than competitors.

New platforms entail a huge investment and are usually utilised for multiple vehicles. Mahindra has invested INR 800-2,000 crore in the development of the Marazzo’s platform.

It has a high usage of aluminium, and that’s the reason the Mahindra Marazzo is reportedly lighter than most competitors. Mahindra will try to make several new products underpinned by the new platform to get the maximum returns out of its investment and reduce development and production costs.

Speaking to mint this week, Dr. Pawan Goenka, MD, Mahindra & Mahindra, said:

It is becoming more and more challenging for Indian automakers to launch products profitably. A platform is typically designed for a decade, spawning multiple body styles and powertrains. We will use this (Mahindra Marazzo’s) platform to produce either premium luxury cars or small commercial vehicles.

The other vehicles riding on the Mahindra Marazzo’s platform will weigh lighter, and this will help them meet future regulatory requirements such as the CAFE norms.

The Mahindra Marazzo was designed by using inputs from Pininfarina and Mahindra’s design studio in Mumbai. For every future product, Pininfarina will create “one full concept”, Rajan Wadhera, President, Automotive Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra, told the business publication.

Before models based on the Marazzo’s platform come, Mahindra will launch two models based on SsangYong platforms: Mahindra Rexton and Mahindra S201. The mid-size SUV will arrive before Diwali, while the sub-compact SUV should roll out at the end of the year. A long body S201 with seven seats is programed for next year.
