Report - Mahindra S101 to get new 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol and diesel motors
The engines are a part of a new homegrown modular architecture.
The Mahindra S101 mini SUV which is in an advanced stage of development is powered by a set of new engines based on a modular engine platform developed in-house from the scratch, reports Autocar India.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Dr. Pawan Goenka, president, M&M, automotive and farm equipment sector, revealed that the new 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines will be seen on a Mahindra product next year.
The statement implies that the sub-4 metre S101 which is slated to be launched next year would get these powerplants. Dr. Goenka also revealed that the new engine family will include 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines in addition to a 1.5-litre diesel unit.
The modular platform would cater to both Mahindra and its South Korean subsidiary, Ssangyong Motors. The 1.6-litre units would debut in the upcoming Ssangyong X100 compact SUV (not for India) which will launch in the international markets in early-2015.

Coming back to the 1.2-litre engines, the units are essentially the 1.6-litre mills with one cylinder dropped. Most of the components would be shared thereby resulting in good economies of scale.
