Base variant of the Mahindra S201 with steel wheels spotted in Mumbai

Motoroids reader Udayan Chakraborty has come up with images of a test mule of the Mahindra S201 (codename) testing on the Ghodbunder road in Mumbai. The test unit seems to belong to the entry-level trim as it rides on steel wheels and lacks the roof rails, and rear washer and wiper.

Various spy images have revealed that the base-level trim of the Mahindra S201 will sport steel wheels and will make do without roof rails, and rear washer and wiper.

Our exclusive images of the fully-loaded version have revealed that the top-end grade of the S201 will offer an electric sunroof, LED headlamps and tail lamps, diamond-cut alloy wheels, rear disc brakes, and a rear washer and wiper. Other than this, the equipment list of the new model will include a touchscreen infotainment unit that is likely to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Passive Keyless Entry, Push Button Start/Stop, dual-zone automatic climate control, seven airbags, and a multi-function steering wheel.

The Mahindra S201 will be available in both petrol and diesel engine variants. The gasoline motor on offer will displace 1.2-litre and will employ a turbocharger to offer a good mix of performance and fuel efficiency. The oil-burner will be shared with the Mahindra Marazzo. The recently launched MPV boasts an all-new 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine that outputs a maximum power of 121 bhp and a peak torque of 300 Nm. The new-age motors have been jointly developed with Ssangyong Motor.  The oil-burner will be mated a 6-speed manual transmission. An AWD system is unlikely to be offered.

While the Ssangyong Tivoli measures 4,195 mm, the Mahindra S201 will be a sub-4-metre model that will benefit from lower taxation.

While the Mahindra S201 will be a derivative of the Ssangyong Tivoli, it will enjoy its own distinct identity owing to an all-new front and rear fascias and a shorter wheelbase. The Tivoli is 4,195 mm long, but the S201 will be a sub-4 meter model. The shorter overall length will benefit it from lower taxation that is levied on cars measuring less than 4-metres in length.
