IAB’s illustrator Shoeb R Kalania renders the production-ready Mahindra S201 seeing new spy media. The Tivoli-based compact SUV will launch next month and is looking already like a formidable competitor to the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the five-star rated Tata Nexon.

The new Mahindra SUV may lack the dynamic ability to please a tame racing driver, but its performance and equipment should draw more than a glance from premium SUV customers.

While the Ssangyong Tivoli measures 4,202 mm, the Mahindra S201, in spite of sharing aplenty with the donor, has a sub-4-metre length to qualify for lower GST. Moreover, the new model will feature a distinctive front- and rear-end styling. Up front are the new projector headlamps with U-shaped LED signature lights, a signature Mahindra grille with six-slot toothed design, and a bolder bumper.

The rear features an entirely new tailgate with registration plate housing, horizontally-positioned tail light clusters, and a new bumper. In comparison, the Tivoli has vertically stacked tail lamps, while its rear licence plate can be found on the bumper. The flared wheel arch at the rear is less expressive on the Mahindra from the C-Pillar redo.

The equipment list will carry several high-end gadgets, including dual-zone automatic climate control, touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, leather upholstery, engine start-stop button and electric sunroof. The safety net available on the new model will comprise rear parking sensors, rear parking camera and ABS with EBD, four-wheel disc brakes, front parking sensors, ESP, and seven airbags.

The Mahindra S201 will be available in turbocharged petrol and diesel engine variants. The former will displace 1.2-litre and will be capable of producing up to 136 PS. The latter will be the 1.5-litre unit that debuted on the Marazzo. It outputs 122.64 PS and 300 Nm.

The Mahindra S201, that some refer to as the Mahindra Inferno, is likely to have a starting price of INR 7.5 lakh. M&M was to announce the name of the new SUV on 1 December, but postponed the press conference.
