2.2L petrol engine for Mahindra Scorpio, Mahindra XUV500 in the works - Report
Invests INR 1,000 crore for R&D.
Mahindra & Mahindra is investing INR 1,000 crore in the development of petrol engines over two to three years. The motor will be introduced on the company's two large SUVs, the Mahindra Scorpio and the Mahindra XUV500.
In the due course, Mahindra will have four petrol engines that will all be spread across the existing product range. The 1.2-litre mFalcon G80 has been launched on the Mahindra KUV100 last month. The upcoming mills will have displacements of 1.5-litre, 1.6-litre and 2.2-litre. The smaller units will be developed in-house, while the 2.2-litre engine will be co-developed with its South Korean subsidiary, SsangYong Motor Company (SMC).
Dr Pawan Goenka, Executive Director of Mahindra & Mahindra, apart from revealing the above information to Economic Times, also disclosed that the company is reviewing platform sharing with SMC.

The development of petrol engines comes as a move to diversify the product portfolio to shield the company from cases such as the Supreme Court ban on diesel cars with engines larger than 2.0 litres of displacement in the National Capital Region (NCR), especially since such a scenario may arise in other metro cities in the foreseeable future.
