Likely to be based on a hydroformed ladder-frame chassis.

The Mahindra U301 (codename for Mahindra's new compact SUV) was spotted on tests once again, but these images show the prototype with production headlight clusters. The rectangular light clusters bear little resemblance to the Bolero, which is touted to be replaced with the U301.

Mahindra is likely to debut a new 1.5-liter diesel engine on the U301 or the S101.

The front fascia of the U301 also gets an XUV-esque vertically-arranged grille, while the side profile reveals short overhangs, suggesting a sub-4 meter length. Aiding its compact dimensions is the spare wheel which is mounted on the rear door.

The U301 is reported to be based on a hydroformed ladder-frame chassis, much like the new Scorpio, with a rear-wheel drive layout. Power is expected to come from a new 1.5-liter diesel engine matched to a 5-speed manual and automated manual transmission. It remains to be seen if the U301 gets a petrol engine, or even all-wheel drive capability.

The U301 and S101 will be among the two brand new products for Mahindra this year.

Top-end variants of the U301 will get a touchscreen infotainment system, steering-mounted controls, dual airbags with ABS, alloy wheels, and possibly even a climate control system. However, what remains a mystery is if the U301 will get a 5+2 seating layout (like the Quanto), or a traditional 5-seat layout.
