The Mahindra XUV300 is available with two engines that offer the best-in-segment torque but not class-leading efficiency.

At the Mahindra XUV300 launch, IAB queried Rajan Wadhera, President, Mahindra & Mahindra (Automotive), about the possibility of offering an XUV300 CNG option. He said: "CNG may come but it’ll come a little later. It’s a natural part of the evolution,” he added. However, the development of this alternative fuel option has not started. Mahindra currently offers a CNG option in the KUV100, but in only the Trip variant that is targeted at the fleet.

The XUV300 is Mahindra’s first model available with the 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that develops 110 BHP at 5,000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 2,000-3,500 rpm. The diesel engine is shared with the Marazzo, and but it comes in a different tuning: 115 bhp at 3,750 rpm and 300 Nm of torque at 1,500-2,500 rpm. These engines offer the best-in-segment torque. However, with the fuel economy rated at 17 km/l (petrol)/20 km/l (diesel), they don’t make the SUV the most frugal model in its segment, and the company said that was deliberate to give users a thrilling driving performance.

Future additions to the Mahindra XUV300 will include an AMT option. Currently, a 6-speed manual transmission is standard. Wadhera has confirmed that an AMT option is arriving shortly. Reports suggest that after the BSVI upgrade next year, a torque converter automatic transmission will replace this AMT. Moreover, a pure electric variant is also in the works, and the company expects it to be ready for launch in the second half of 2020.
