Maruti Ciaz to get 1.5L diesel engine option soon, specs & mileage revealed
A new report from Team-BHP suggests that Maruti Suzuki will introduce its in-house developed 1.5-litre diesel engine, codenamed ‘E15A’, in the Maruti Ciaz soon.
According to the report, the E15A engine has a displacement of 1,498 cc. It’s a four-cylinder unit that produces 94 bhp (95.30 PS) at 4,000 rpm and 225 Nm of torque at 1,500-2,500 rpm. As one would expect, Maruti Suzuki will brand this engine ‘DDiS 225’, the 225 denoting maximum torque. In comparison, the Honda City’s 1.5-litre i-DTEC four-cylinder diesel engine develops 100 PS at 3,600 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm.
The E15A engine will probably conform to BSIV emission norms initially, and leap to BSVI level with an upgrade in early 2020. The report says that the new diesel engine won’t feature the SHVS mild-hybrid system and despite that will deliver a fuel economy of 26.82 km/l in the Ciaz. In comparison, the Honda City 1.5L i-DTEC has a fuel economy rating of 25.6 km/l.
The existing D13A engine will continue as the most frugal option (28.09 km/l) but has no future. Maruti Suzuki doesn't plan to upgrade it to comply with BSVI emission norms and the royalty-laden Fiat engine would be discontinued by March 2020.

Maruti Suzuki will expand the availability of the all-new 1.5-litre diesel engine to the S-Cross and the Ertiga. This engine should find a place on the company’s Mahindra XUV500 rivaling SUV it is developing on the basis of (Suzuki’s) fifth-generation C platform, albeit in a more powerful and torquier guise. The top-end model is scheduled to enter production in 2020.
